East Delhi District has its share of historical moments that date back to the time when people used to live on one side of the Yamuna River as they feared pirates and invaders owning to which Delhi prevailed on the west banks of the river. However, between 1980 and 1990, this area saw an influx of population leading to the construction of a bridge connecting the east and the west of the river named ‘Tans Yamuna’ and was geographically christened as ‘East Delhi’. Hence, this district is bounded on the east by the Yamuna River and by the other districts on the remaining surrounding boundaries.

East Delhi is highly populated with over 14.8 lakhs inhabitants of diverse backgrounds and an area spanning over 64 Sq. Km. The area is well connected to other parts of Delhi and neighbouring states and is generally one of the most crowded and busiest places in Delhi prone to major traffic congestions causing jams and blocks for hours. However, with the advent of Delhi Metro, this has greatly reduced the traffic concerns and has eased the rush around this district.
